Tumblrz, I am an ICU nurse. Granted a new nurse, but nonetheless an ICU nurse. I have to say, it is something else seeing a loved one on the business end of a code.
For the uninitiated, a code is what we do when someone stops breathing or his heart stops. Codes follow specific algorithms depending upon the rhythm the heart is in and work to correct the underlying problem that caused the initial arrest. Codes are an odd mix of exhilarating and serene calm; codes are an all-hands-on-deck situation.
So to see it done to someone you’ve known forever, is very odd. It’s also a situation where knowing as much as I do, thirty seconds was all I needed to see to know they were past the point of saving him.
